ISSUE 6: Building a Culture of Wellbeing
As we return from what was hopefully a restful break, it is important to begin to consider where we are on our wellbeing journey. We have worked hard in the first term to set the foundations to cultivate a positive wellbeing environment and, while we continue to work towards that, it is apt to take a moment to think about culture. In the landscape of education, the significance of fostering a culture of wellbeing cannot be overstated. As we set out on this journey together at GIS, it's imperative to highlight the profound impact that prioritizing wellbeing can have on our students' emotional and academic growth.
Research consistently underscores the transformative power of a wellbeing-focused environment within educational institutions. Lovett et al. (2020) discovered that a culture of wellbeing not only nurtures emotional resilience but also significantly contributes to academic progress. When students feel supported and valued, they are more likely to flourish not only in their studies but also in their overall well-being.
Moreover, Dobia et al. (2018) emphasized the pivotal role that a sense of belonging and inclusion plays in enhancing the overall wellbeing of individuals within a school community. Creating an environment where everyone feels accepted, respected, and a part of something greater is instrumental in fostering a positive atmosphere conducive to growth.
It's fascinating to note that schools cultivating a wellbeing-centered culture witness a remarkable surge in student engagement and motivation (Oades et al., 2017). When students feel connected to their school, its values, and its community, they become active participants in their learning journey. Their enthusiasm and dedication to learning soar, significantly impacting their academic outcomes and personal development.
At GIS, we are committed to harnessing these research-backed insights to create an environment where every individual feels valued, supported, and encouraged to thrive. We aim to not only nurture academic excellence but also foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity that propels each student toward their fullest potential.
