Week Fifteen - January 5th, 2024
Grade 9
Production is well underway in the grade 9 Textile elective classes as students work hard on the construction of their final products. Each student has developed their own individual designs and have selected their own fabrics in relation to their designs. During this stage of the project, the students enjoy seeing their designs come to life whilst utilizing the practical and design skills they have learnt in the first term.
During the final week of Term 1, students attended a lecture delivered by two members of the SailGP company. SailGP is an international sailing competition that has taken the world by storm through its impressive use of science. During the SailGP races the teams must try and reach the finish line of the race course first. The unique component of SailGP that the students learned about was that all the boats for the SailGP competition utilize hydrofoils that allow the main structure of the boat to rise above the water decreasing the drag of that boat hull on the water increasing speed, similar to how aircraft wings create lifts through air, adjustable sails and carbon fiber interior which causes the overall structure of the boat to allow for a high level of speed on the water. Due to the SailGP boats' innovative design and structure, these boats have started to be implemented in other sea-related industries such as shipping. Finally, a great thanks to SailGP for providing our attending students with free tickets to their recent race in Dubai, where the students enjoyed their time and got to see the science behind the boat in action.
