If you don’t already know, the SRC stands for Student Representative Council and is an elected group of students that help organize and plan school events and work as a representative body on behalf of all of the students at Glen Eira College. You will have opportunities to voice your opinions and even better, a chance to join the SRC yourself. This year, the SRC will hold fortnightly meetings on Wednesdays in room 109.
The SRC allows many opportunities for student participation and involvement around our community through exciting house events. These events consist of trivia competitions, bake-offs, and talent contents. The SRC also strongly advocates different community organizations and to show our support, we plan and implement free dress day fundraisers in order to contribute to society. The various charities we donated to in the past were Beyond Blue, Sea Shepherd, Make a Wish Foundation and State Schools Relief.
Members of the SRC are always enthusiastic about contributing to school life. We work together as a team with members from Year 12 all the way down to Year 7. We have a suggestion box in the library but our door is always open if you would like to attend one of our lunchtime meetings. The SRC is truly a wonderful group of people and is the perfect way to get involved in the school, influence the direction of the school and have your voice heard.

The most recent program added to GEC was the recycling bins you might have seen throughout the school grounds. Given to us by the school council, the bins further engaged our school community in recycling. In addition to that, we cannot forget our free dress days that take place every term. Last year we raised 1170 dollars! Which is a great outcome considering that students did not attend on-site learning for most of the year. This money went to various charities, such as Beyond Blue, MND Australia, WWF Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund, Firesticks, Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
RePlas is a company in Australia that reuses recycled plastic to manufacture sustainable products. Furniture, fencing, signs, decking etc. In the previous fundraisers, GEC students were able to raise 350 dollars. With the 350 dollars, SRC planned to use that money for our RePlas benches for our school. We were looking into two main criteria, the price going to be cost-effective for how many benches and the quality that we are looking for that could fit the school. RePlas was a perfect way to support the idea of recycling throughout our school community!
Last year, students within the SRC thought that the bathrooms could do with a bit of attention and flare. We listened and organised a fundraiser and raised enough money to start this project. It took two days to paint the whole six entrance walls in the boys and girls bathrooms with the help of our thoughtful teachers and volunteering students. We also gathered quotes and phrases from all homegroups to paint on the walls. These are the kinds of positive changes the SRC is making within the school, so make sure to check out those paintings on the walls!
This year, GEC is implementing a new project: The Breakfast Club. It is a statewide initiative to ensure students eat breakfast in the morning as studies show that students are more engaged when learning on a full stomach. Any student will be able to access the Breakfast Club if they miss breakfast. The SRC will be involved in assisting with establishing the Breakfast Club this year. Look out for more information on this over the next few weeks, you can access this through the weekly student bulletins!
