Check out what we're learning and reading in the library!
Orientation: Rules & Expectations - We talk about school and library rules and expectations and good choices. We also review library procedures and expectations.
Beanstack and Destiny - I read a book to the students and then lead them step-by-step in how to log their minutes in Beanstack, including how to use the timer function. We also look at Destiny Discover and practice searching by keyword, placing holds, etc.
I read from the following titles:
The Boy Who Grew a Forest: the True Story of Jadav Payeng by Sophia Gholz
Rescue & Jessica: a Life-Changing Friendship by Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes
The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet! by Carmen Agra Deedy
The Talking Eggs by Robert D. San Souci
We Don't Eat Our Classmates! by Ryan T. Higgins
Yoshi, Sea Turtle Genius by Eric A. Kimmel
Introduction to Stations & Stations - I will introduce students to the stations they will be rotating through in the coming months. Students will work on a designated station after I read-aloud from various books by Chris Van Allsburg.
Stations:
Fiction: Students will locate specific fiction shelf ranges and then they will locate specific fiction titles (of interest to 3rd graders) on the shelves.
Nonfiction: Students will locate specific nonfiction shelf ranges and then will locate specific books about given nonfiction topics. Students will use nonfiction signage (words and pictures) to help them locate the topics and books.
Destiny Discover: Students will use Destiny Discover, the library's online catalog, to answer specific questions and become more familiar with using the online catalog. They will write their answers and use them to spell out the answer to a joke.
Fables-Plays/Puppets: Students will create a fable story/storyboard (moral, characters, setting, problem/solution, beginning, middle, end) that they will perform using puppets. They will also cite evidence from their play to show that the moral is supported. They will use existing library puppets, but they could choose to make puppets at the Unplugged Station.
Artificial Intelligence: Students will gain information about the basics of AI by completing an Ocean Activity.
Unplugged Station: Students will select an activity that they will enjoy from the choices given. Not everyone can work on the same choice. They will need to have more than one backup choice. Choices include: Read/self-checkout, Building activities (straws, Brainflakes, craft sticks with Velcro, Plus Plus blocks, KEVA planks, Magnetic tiles, Legos), Jenga, Chess, Checkers, Jigsaw puzzles, Uno, Early finisher crate: copy paper (drawing), lined notebook paper, coloring sheets. Additional choices may be added based on student input.
