Personal Data

As a proud graduate of the GHS Class of 1999, I have continued to pursue education and professional growth in the field of computer science and mathematics. My journey led me to St. Lawrence University, where I majored in Computer Science and Math, and later to Clarkson University, where I earned my Masters in Information Technology.

My career has been deeply rooted in higher education, with various roles within St. Lawrence University, culminating in my current position as the Executive Director of Business Services. Through these experiences, I've gained invaluable insights into organizational management, financial stewardship, and strategic planning.

Beyond my professional endeavors, I am fortunate to share my life with my wife, Amber Ormasen, who has dedicated herself to shaping young minds as the middle school art teacher at GHS since 2006. Together, we are the proud parents of two daughters who enthusiastically embrace their identity as Wildcats.

In our community, we actively participate in local events by operating our family concession stand during the summer, serving up treats like cotton candy and sno-kones. This involvement underscores our commitment to fostering a vibrant and supportive environment for our fellow community members.

With my background in education and technology, combined with a deep-rooted connection to GHS and our community, I am excited about the opportunity to serve on the Gouverneur Board of Education and contribute to the continued success and growth of our school district.

Statement which addresses why you are interested in serving on the Gouverneur Board of Education:

As a lifelong Wildcat and parent, I have a vested interest in the success of our school. I want my children and yours to be as prepared for the challenges they will face throughout their lives as I have been. Many teachers and coaches that have been influential in my life are still dedicated to GHS and I will take pride in giving back as a trusted contributor to the board.

The perspective gained from my career in higher education will be an asset in matters that implicate the skills needed to be successful at the college level. I also recognize that college is not everyone’s chosen path and it’s important we provide high quality programming to all students to ensure each can reach their highest potential.

We have dedicated people that with the adequate resources and support can transform GCS into the highest achieving school in our region. The safety of our students remains the highest priority and I commit to continue to work alongside my fellow board members to maintain a healthy balance of resources. It is an exciting time to be a Wildcat and for these reasons, I am running again for the school board. Go Cats!

Laurie M. Roberts

Incumbent; previously served 3 terms - 7/1/2007-6/30/2016; returned 7/1/18 for a total of 15 years to date.

Personal Data

My name is Laurie Roberts, and I am running for reelection for the Gouverneur Central School Board of Education.  Gouverneur has always been home. My husband, two daughters, and I all attended Gouverneur Central. As a parent, I have spent countless hours cheering on my own children, along with their teammates, in various sports programs. I also supported the many extracurricular clubs they participated in throughout their school careers. My support did not stop after my own children were no longer students at GCS, as I still enjoy attending games, musicals, and other events. The Wildcat Community is something that I have been a part of, valued, and strongly supported for many years. My support will continue for years to come.

I recently retired after a 36 year career in education at Indian River Central. For 32 years, I was a 4th grade teacher, and the last 4 years prior to retiring, I was lucky enough to work with many teachers as a math instructional coach.  Along with my teaching duties over the years, I served in many other capacities. I served as head teacher, building president, treasurer, vice-president, and later co-president of the Indian River Education Association and served on student academic intervention committees, negotiation committees, curriculum committees, and many more. I feel that my background, knowledge, and experience in education, along with my previous 5 terms as a board member, for a total of 15 years, makes me a valuable candidate and representative for our students, staff, and community.

Statement which addresses why you are interested in serving on the Gouverneur Board of Education:

I am interested in continuing to serve on the Board of Education because we still have a lot of work to do. I will continue to be a voice and advocate for programs and positions that are in the best interest of children. Doing our best to maintain and create a safe environment, provide resources to meet our students’ needs, support our staff, improve student achievement, and maintain our extracurricular activities will continue to be of utmost importance.  I think we have implemented some positive changes recently, and I’m excited and hopeful that the impact of those changes will come to fruition.

This is a challenging time in public education. We must work together to make this a successful experience for our children, our future leaders, our families, our educators, and our community. Please remember to do your part and vote on May 21st.  I would appreciate your support as well!
