The second semester is such an exciting time in first grade! Routines are revisited, friendships are strengthened and many connections are made during learning. Great strides are taken in our move toward SECOND GRADE. We will be working on gaining independence during work time and in our reading. It is very important for your child to spend time reading homework books each evening. The practice will reinforce strategies taught in class and help your child move from "learning to read" to "reading to learn". Remember to complete weekly math homework and return it to school by Friday, too. The reading and math practice will help establish positive routines that will carryover throughout your child's school experience.
First graders have recess at 10:45 each morning. Please remember to send appropriate outerwear for recess to school each day. If the temperature and windchill permit us to have outdoor recess (per GCISD temperature guidelines), we go out. Please label all outerwear with your child's name. Jackets, gloves, hats, mittens, etc. are often dropped or left in the hall during restroom breaks and we want them to find their owner if this happens.
Mid-year assessments are now complete. Reading and math assessment results will be shared with families after data meetings.
Are you looking for ways to support your child's learning? Here are a few practice ideas that you may try at home:
Read 20 minutes daily
library books
Kids A - Z app
Practice addition and subtraction facts to 10
Write a thank you note or friendly letter
Practice identifying coins and their value
Count sets of like coins
Observe the moon each night and draw a picture of how it appears on paper
Bake something together
The first grade team is excited to announce that plans for our big field trip are underway! First graders will be going on a field trip to the Dallas World Aquarium on Wednesday, March 27. Each classroom will need several chaperones so we wanted to let you know in advance so you are able to plan accordingly. All chaperones will need to complete a GCISD Volunteer Background Check.
Read homework books nightly
Record minutes spent reading on the Read Across Texas recording sheet
Math homework is due each Friday
Return library books each Thursday
Send a fully charged iPad to school each day
Send a healthy snack to school each day
Place "just in case" clothing in your child's backpack
If you plan to attend school events such as class parties, family picnics, awards, grade level programs and more during the school year, you will need to complete a GCISD Volunteer Background Check. GCISD Volunteer Background Check
School begins at 7:40 each morning
