Fourth Grade DUAL

Cannon Elementary

10-3-17

These past few weeks have been full of lots of fun. We have had lots of great authentic learning going on in fourth grade. It all started with our field trip to the water treatment plant of Grapevine. The students were give the chance to see how our water in Grapevine gets filtered and cleaned before we drink it from our homes and at school. Then throughout the week ALL the students were hard at work on their first cornerstone task of the year. All the students were given the choice of how they presented what they learned about Texas. We were so proud of all the projects that they made.

This week we welcomed our student teacher Emily Woychick. She will be Mrs. Bryant's student teacher for the next 7 weeks on Mondays and Tuesdays and then again in February for 7 weeks everyday. We are so excited to welcome her. These past few days have been a blast getting to know her and helping work with students.

We started our unit on SOIL with a fun lab today testing how much water was absorbed in various types of soil. We looked at particle size under the microscopes and are excited to talk to the construction guys about the soil that will sit under the new school. We can not wait for all the learning we have in store, but the students are most excited about their 4 DAY WEEKEND!!!!

Today in humanities we spent some time looking at our writing from the beginning of the year and evaluating what stage we are at and setting goals for ourselves. It was interesting getting to look at the characteristics of a good writer and setting goals for our year in writing. We realized that while we all have a lot of already existing good skills we have a lot of things to learn still.

This week in science we are extending our learning of Mixtures and Solutions to create a water filter. Students were given a problem: There are millions of people around the world who do not have access to clean drinking water. Drinking unclean water can lead to sickness. Your challenge is to create a handheld/portable water filter prototype for those in need. Students immediately got to work using the engineering design process to create a plan for their portable water filter. I cant wait to see what our scholars design next week when we begin building!

The design challenge was introduced using this video to create empathy and a real world connection to our design project.

We are so excited for our new set of fourth graders to come and join us for a great year. We are excited for all the fun we have planned for the first day of school. Get ready to view the Solar eclipse and do some fun research and learning about why and how this amazing event happens. Get ready to try and ESCAPE!!!! We have some fun "back to school"and "get to know your teachers" Escape the Classroom puzzles and activities planned the first day!!! We cant wait to see everyone Monday morning at 7:40.

Parents pease refer to Mrs. Blizzards email newsletter explaining a few of the changes this year due to construction. This will mostly effect parents that come up to school between 10:00AM and 1:30PM for lunch and other things. We will be having recess in the front area of the school so if you do choose to come up here you will have to park and walk around. School hours are still 7:40AM-2:55PM. We are really working on making sure that all students get to school on time so please help us reach this goal. SEE YOU MONDAY Aug. 21st!!!!

DUAL 4th Curriculum Night 2017-18

Parents here is the curriculum night presentation from this year. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help answer any questions. We are using the REMIND app as our main form of communication. If you look in the presentation you will see the join codes for n=both English and Spanish. Thanks and we are looking forward to a great year.
