Optional Opportunities for Credit

If students need to pursue other avenues for credit, the following options are available. Information on the following options is available through the counseling office.

Credit By Exam Without Prior Instruction

The District shall give a student in grades 6-12 credit for an academic subject in which the student has received no prior instruction if the student scores 80 percent or above on a criterion-referenced examination for acceleration for the applicable course. If such credit is given, the District shall enter the examination score on the student’s transcript. Courses for which credit is earned by examination in grades 9-12 shall not be included in the calculation of the weighted grade point average for purposes of class ranking. Requests for these examinations are made to the Director of Accountability and Continuous Improvement.

Credit By Exam With Prior Instruction

The District shall give a student in grades 6-12 credit for an academic subject in which he or she had some prior instruction (courses which students have completed but not been awarded credit), if the student scores 70 percent or better on a criterion-referenced test for the applicable course. College admissions standards may change over time. Parents and students are encouraged to research admittance requirements for each college the student is interested in applying to prior to taking a CBE as admissions standards can vary from college to college. There is no guarantee colleges will recognize CBE credit as fulfilling a core requirement.

Other requirements:

NCAA/NAIA bound athletes need to research how taking a CBE can impact NCAA/NAIA eligibility. If a student wishes to take Health via correspondence or CBE, the student must prove CPR certification prior to approval.

Correspondence Courses

High school students may earn up to two (2.0) credits toward graduation through correspondence courses. Students wishing to enroll in correspondence courses must consult with a counselor. Correspondence courses shall be used for emergencies or enrichment only and should not become a substitute for residence work. Courses are subject to approval by the principal. Students are responsible for paying all fees for course materials and resources. Correspondence courses are not included in the calculation of GPA or class rank.

Other Requirements:

If a student wishes to take Health via correspondence or CBE, the student must prove CPR certification prior to approval. All correspondence courses must be COMPLETE before the first day of a student’s senior year.

Students must submit the online form that can be found under the counseling tab of their current school’s webpage PRIOR to enrolling in a correspondence course.

Students enrolling in a Texas Tech University ISD correspondence course on or after September 1, 2019 will use Proctorio, the 24/7 online proctoring tool, to have final exams administered. Counselors will no longer administer final exams. Please visit the TTUISD Proctorio FAQ website for more information.

Summer Classes

One full credit may be earned in each session of the Secondary Summer School program. Courses in core subjects as well as electives are available on a fee basis.
