Mr. Reilly

MYP Math teacher at Gateway International School

Good day to you. This is my 14th year teaching at Gateway International School, and my first year as MYP Math teacher. I have a few philosophies about teaching I would like to share. It is my goal to have all of my students "master" the skills laid out in the Learning Targets of each grade. Mastering the skill means that they understand the concept and know how to complete the tasks they are given. Because of this, it is of the utmost importance that students ask questions as we go along. I need them to tell me what they don't know, and/or ask me to slow down, or repeat what I am showing. This process will help us both.

What is a good student?

A good student will:

A true Fact about Math

Every year I ask my students: Who doesn't like math. Many in the class raise their hands. This is typical of students. Math is not for everyone. I ask the same students, who don't like math, if math is hard for them. Almost all of them agree. So I tell them this:

Math is easy when it's easy,

and hard when it's hard.

So...Let's make it easy!

My goal is to make Math easier to understand for students. As they start understanding concepts, they are more receptive to learning newer concepts. I take the fear of numbers away, and help them have Math make sense.
