Most universities around the world do not need any additional testing other than your IB exam results or predicted grades, however, some universities and courses will. Here are a few of the additional exams you might need to take in the future, but please do your own research as well.
SAT/ACT: US admissions, both are equally accepted, take in December Grade 11 at the earliest, G12 at the latest
TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo: English proficiency in many countries; take in Grade 11 at the earliest, G12 at the latest
LNAT: UK Law entrance exam; take in the summer/autumn of Grade 12
UCAT/UCAT ANZ: UK and Australia medical entrance exams; take in the summer/autumn of Grade 12
ISAT: Australia medical entrance exam for international students at some universities
ESAT/TMUA/TARA: Mathematics aptitude tests for admission to some selective STEM and social science courses in the UK
Oxford Subject Tests: Subject-specific, check course websites, take in the autumn of Grade 12
University-specific exam or aptitude test: Universities may offer their own interview or aptitude test to assess fit
Should I take the SAT? If you are applying to the United States, you might need to take the SAT if your university requires it. For "test-optional" US universities, you have the option to take the SAT and submit your scores if they are strong.
Do I need to take the TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo? In most cases, your years in an English-medium school and/or taking IB English A will be sufficient proof. However, if you are taking English B or have not studied high school completely in English, you may be required to take one of these. Check university websites and with the UAC directly if you are unsure.
Should I take AP or A-Level exams to demonstrate strong academics? No! Universities often tell us this is unnecessary as the IB is rigorous enough on its own. Your extra time is better spent deepening your interests, developing your curiosity in academic subjects, and making an impact in your community.
Can I take UK Admission tests multiple times?
In most cases, no. Most of the time, you can only sit the test once. Sometimes, there is only one date available, and other times there are multiple dates available.
Is the UCAT ANZ valid for the UK and Australia medicine courses?
Yes! However, you may also be required to take a different entrance exam for Australia medicine courses, depending on where you apply.
Which other universities or courses require entrance exams?
Most universities do not require additional entrance exams, however, you need to check on the uni websites during your Grade 11 research to see the requirements. Examples of additional entrance exams are: IE University's online admission test and the SUTD University Entrance Examination.
