Students in every grade have discovered Hopscotch as a way to create imaginative programs that they code themselves. This site will give you some ideas and lessons for bringing that creativity into your classroom.
Have your students download the hopscotch app on their iPads from Self-Service
Although it is possible to use a guest (random) log in for Hopscotch, it is helpful for teachers to register for an educator account. Hopscotch will then email you with the proper number of student accounts for your class.
The team at Hopscotch have developed a curriculum with several activities to help kids to get started with code. When you sign up for a teacher account, you will automatically receive access to their curriculum documentation and learn to code activities. You can also access them here.
Learning to code does not have to be in Math or Science class. In the real world, code is everywhere! Therefore, it can have a place in every classroom and subject area. Here are a few sample lesson plans (from Hopscotch) that you can encourage in your classroom.
This video lesson turns your iPad into a good ol' fashon Etch-O-Sketch. Try it for yourself. Better yet, have your students give it a shot. Start and stop the video to let the kids catch up. Let them help each other. Remember "Ask three before they ask me!" When all else fails, here is the answer key.
Be sure to reach out if your students create a program that others should see. Use the new screen capture tools for iPad to make a video that shows all your steps. I would also be happy to meet with students to film their project.
