(updated 2/20/2024)
The following procedures need to be followed once textbooks and library books have been withdrawn from the district. All questions regarding the disposal process need to be addressed to Amy Coronado, Procurement and Contract Manager, 541-355-1137 or amy.coronado@bend.k12.or.us.
All pages with markings or stamping of Bend-La Pine Schools must be either removed or the marking must be covered with black marker prior to donating, selling, or recycling.
Books can be given to classroom teachers for use in their classroom.
Books can be given to students in a non-discriminating fashion. Multiple books may be given to students that want them.
The remainder of the books can be sold to the public (including staff if not used in the classroom) for a nominal fee (25 cents per book is suggested).
It is important that sold books are offered to the general public and not just to staff and that there is a price for the books, they cannot be given away to the public. It would be easy to advertise the sale of books in the schools newsletter or on the District’s website.
The proceeds from the sale of the books can go into a Student Body account for the school library as long as proper accounting procedures are followed.
Books that are not disposed of in steps 2 through 4 above must be recycled. The front and back covers of hard bound books must be cut off the books and is garbage. The inside of the book is recyclable paper and should be placed in the proper recycle container.
NO LONGER shall books be sent to the Warehouse for disposal, the above procedures must be followed.

Textbooks that are no longer needed in the school should first be sold to a textbook buyer (listed below). The textbook buyer will visit the school and buy the books that they can sell or consign for a later payment.
Please contact the textbook buyer prior to boxing up the books and they will box the books they purchase.
The school usually has an option of accepting credit for the books purchased to use against future orders, or to accept a check. We recommend that the schools accept the credit as it is usually larger than the check. If a check is issued or necessary for the purchase of the textbooks, then the check must be made out to the District and sent to Amy in Purchasing. The schools may not accept a check from the textbook buyers.
If you cannot sell, you may donate.
