Geriatrics is the study of medical problems related to the aging process. Providing consistent, integrated care across specific care settings, sometimes called continuity of care, is thus particularly important for elderly patients. Through a series of lectures, discussions, group work, online and self-directed learning key areas related to geriatric care will be explored. As part of this learning process you will analyse, appraise and reflect on geriatric care concepts, including current evidence surrounding common nursing and medical interventions for aged.

Geriatric care provides an opportunity to explore the area of Gerontology, a field of nursing that focuses on the care of older adults. The course presents the unique health care needs of the older adult and introduces students to nursing approaches to managing those needs. This course provides an overview of the biology, sociology and psychology of aging, aging process, risk factors that affect the health and functioning of elderly patients are studied to determine best nursing practices for managing those needs or risks, communication, prescriptions and the resources available to the aged. This course is designed to correlate theory and clinical practice in providing care to the geriatric population.

The challenge in health care demands for older persons requires adequate number of nurses specially trained in geriatric nursing in order to provide competent care to the older people. The certificate programme, in geriatric care is specially developed for healthcare professionals looking to further their clinical knowledge within elderly care. There are also ample opportunity for homecare nursing for geriatric care.

Assessment will be based on internship, case discussion and written objective type of test which will be conducted at the end of this course. There shall be no university exam/s.

The methodology throughout this course will be a blend of key theoretical concepts and practical aspects of it through exposure in hospital. The training flow will have an interactive sessions based on real case based examples. The training will include focus group discussions and case study approach for comprehensive understanding.
