Primary data - the videos from MoLo

All of the MoLo sessions were recorded over Zoom - usually using a screen recording but sometimes relying on the Zoom cloud recording. 

Each session had two participants, an interviewer and a tech backup. Each MoLo session consisted of an introduction to the team, checking on consent and the like, sharing a personal narrative, engaging in free conversation, responding to a systems prompt and participating in a language attitudes and awareness interview then closing with a check in.  The interviewer and tech backup were on video along with the two participants in the beginning then the tech backup turned off their video until the end. The interviewer introduced the first two tasks then turned off their video until the third task (systems prompt) and remained on throughout the rest of the session. 

Depending on the participants' preferences for sharing (see more under '"metadata"), we share videos for each task that we were permitted to share openly (narrative, conversation, systems prompt, and interview). We link to each video below but you'll need to watch them on YouTube itself to access more information for each video in their YouTube description. Again, not all videos from our project are listed here - only the ones that gave us permission to share their data publicly.

Videos and transcripts are linked here one by one. The videos are being shared via YouTube and the transcripts via OSF. 

We are so thankful to our participants for trusting us with their stories. As caretakers of these stories, we have a responsibility to care for the data. With guidance from CARE and FAIR guidelines, which are ways to care for digital data and making them open but in ways our ASL  communities prefer. We also acknowledge, respect, and celebrate different language experiences - there is no one right way to use language. 

MoLo Narratives

Participants were asked by interviewer in ASL to share a brief narrative  about something funny, danger of death, memorable experience regarding the deaf experience, or a life-changing event.  Please note that the interviewer provided the prompt then turned off their video. 

MoLo Conversations

After each participant shared their personal narrative, they were asked to engage in free conversation for a bit (10-20 minutes).  The interviewer video is still off but sometimes is turned back on to prompt participants to start their conversation.

MoLo Systems Prompt

Interviewer rejoined the participants to facilitate the "systems prompt" task in which each participant was asked to describe some kind of system (e.g., typical day or morning routine, opening a bank account, applying for a job, how academic bowl works, etc.). 

MoLo Language Attitude and Awareness Interviews

The final task is the language attitude and awareness interview, adapted from the BSL corpus, for ASL.  Each question, 15 in total, was asked in ASL by the interviewer.
