Job shadowing is an important experience for high school students because it provides a real-world look at careers beyond what can be learned in a classroom. It allows students to see what a typical workday looks like, understand workplace expectations, and explore whether a career truly matches their interests and strengths.
Through job shadowing, students can make more informed decisions about their future. It helps them connect what they are learning in school to actual careers, giving purpose to their education and often increasing motivation. Students also gain valuable exposure to professional environments, which can build confidence, communication skills, and workplace awareness.
Additionally, job shadowing creates opportunities to network with professionals, ask questions, and learn directly from people in the field. These connections can lead to future internships, mentorships, or even job opportunities.
Overall, job shadowing helps students take an active role in planning their future, making it a key step in preparing for life after high school.
STEPS LISTED BELOW HOW TO GET STARTED
Think about careers you are interested in exploring and identify a business or professional in that field.
Reach out to the business or professional to ask about setting up a job shadow. Be polite and professional when communicating. Work with them to schedule a date and time that works for both you and the location.
Before your job shadow, go to the school office and request the job shadow permission form and the visit form.
Take the form home and gave a parent or guardian review and sign it.
Return the signed form to the high school office prior to your scheduled job shadow date. This step must be completed in advanced to be approved.
Arrive on time, dress appropriately, and be respectful. Ask questions and take notes to get the most out of your experience. After completing your job shadow, have your supervisor sign the required verification form to confirm your participation.
Write a short paragraph describing your experience, including what you learned, what you liked, and whether the career is something you may want to pursue.
Submit the signed supervisor form along with your reflection paragraph to the office.
