Many districts have moved to using an alternative to suspension program when a student violates the school's code of conduct due to substance use. A student on school property who is caught smoking/vaping for the first time may be referred to the district’s substance program in lieu of traditional suspension programs.
School Mental Health Staff members may be trained in these substance abuse cessation programs to then be delivered, as needed, for students in need. Eastern Suffolk BOCES can provide your staff with training for these cessation programs. Please see the "School Programs & Services" tab for more information.

Below are excerpts from school districts in New York State that have included vaping cessation programs in their codes of conduct. Please note, these are simply samples of other districts' codes of conduct and should not be considered a recommendation or as an exemplar.
South Country Central School District
Excerpt:
First Offense - A student on school property who is caught smoking/ vaping a first time will be referred to the district’s teen intervene substance program pending parent/guardian permission. If the parent/guardian refuses to give consent to the program the student will serve suspension after school. A student who is determined to be in the possession of tobacco products or accessories, e-cigarettes or vapor instruments and/or products, and dab pens and/or cartridges of any kind will be referred to the district’s teen intervene substance program pending parent/ guardian permission. If the parent/guardian refuses to give consent to the program the student will serve suspension after school.

Student participation in a tobacco-cessation program and/or tobacco education class may be allowed as an alternative to discipline.
