Do's:
Ask children to self-monitor
Focus on self-improvement
Limit practice to short time segments
Work on facts over time
Involve families
Make fact practice enjoyable
Use technology
Emphasize the importance of knowing their facts
Don'ts:
Use timed tests
Use public comparisons of mastery
Proceed through the facts in order from 0 to 9
Work on all the facts all at once in a given activity or game
Expect quick recall too soon
Use facts as barrier to good mathematics
Use fact mastery as a prerequisite for calculator use
