Keep the ball rolling for 2025!
With the support of donors, volunteers, grants from private foundations and funding from the Enabling Accessibility Fund the money was successfully raised to restore the underpass of Road 25 at Blyth. The project was run by the County of Huron and was successfully completed July 1, 2024. Please join us in celebrating an important milestone in reconnecting the trail and improving the safety and accessibility at the Highway 25 crossing. The Grand Opening of the Tunnel will be happening in conjunction with the celebration of the improvements to the Blyth Trailhead by North Huron.
Please join us for an evening of celebration and community spirit including a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local dignitaries, refreshments and snacks. Register today & make a donation to G2G Rail Trail for your chance to win a new e-bike.
Date: September 6th
Time: 4 PM - 6 PM
The tunnel maintains continuity of the inclusive, safe trail experience that has attracted international attention, a wide range of users across Ontario, and Huron residents’ enthusiasm.
It eliminates a barrier for mobility devices, recumbent bikes, children, e-bikes, bike-packers, the elderly, etc.
Opens up opportunities for tourism, cultural celebrations, economic vitality and public health initiatives.
Enhances the practicality of regional active transportation and keeps cyclists on the trail right of way.
Extends seasonal recreational use for skiing, snowshoeing, fat bikes, etc.
Eliminates an unmarked hazardous crossing of Blyth Road 25, a combination of high-speed traffic, narrow road allowance and compromised lines of sight.
As a wildlife crossing, it will enhance environmental connectivity for a wide range of species along the Blyth Brook habitat area and reduce wildlife car collisions.
The legacy of this project will continue to benefit future generations.
We are nearly at our goal of a fully inclusive, barrier-free, safe, 55 km long Lake Huron Route, from the beaches of Lake Huron to the wilds of McNaught! We are leading toward Huron County’s decarbonized future with a linear parkway, providing an active transportation freeway that is interconnected across southern Ontario
The work completed since 2020 has the G2G Rail Trail in world-class condition but with a few remaining barriers:
With 6-8 million dollars raised over the next three years, we could unlock the full potential of the trail in Huron County.
That is:
Develop a plan to bridge the gap at North Harbour Road
Restore the Maitland River bridge at Auburn
Refurbish the Menesetung Bridge
Complete the Sturdy Drain crossing [scheduled installation for 2025]
Upgrade trailheads and access points
Establish a legacy fund to cover trail maintenance costs for the next decade.
The G2G Rail Trail Experience is operated almost entirely by volunteers (with one paid staff member). The province owns the right of way and leases it to G2G Rail Trail and other stakeholders. It is designated as a recreational, non-motorized trail and is maintained by G2G and its steward groups for that purpose. Limited grant funding for specific projects has been matched by donations from folks like you at a rate of over 2:1 to facilitate work done to date. G2G Rail Trail Inc. is a registered charity and issues tax receipts for eligible contributions.
A preliminary engineering report was completed in September '21. An updated report will be required to refine the estimated costs
The project is expected to cost between 3 to 4.5 million dollars
the proposed design would consist of two 200' spans utilizing the center pillar
trail clearing and grading on the east end from Maitland Block has been completed
an engineering report was completed in August 2021.
to maintain the structural integrity of the bridge will require remediation within 3-5 years
cost estimate is $600-$900,000
restoring the bridge across North Harbour Road is under consideration. This would enhance accessibility from the beach to the Menesetung Bridge
