As some of the first female members to join the University of Kentucky Wildcat Marching Band in 1960, the UK Feature Twirlers and Sweetheart Majorette twirling line is rich in tradition, excellence, and is comprised of national champion twirlers from all over the United States.
Taking pride in being one of the best twirling schools in the SEC, the UK twirling program loves being a part of the Wildcat Marching Band and representing twirling in front of 70,000+ CATS fans at Kroger Field.
The University of Kentucky Sweetheart Majorette & Feature Twirler auditions consist of a live tryout that will be conducted in front of a panel of judges. Auditions will be held on the University of Kentucky campus. More details will be provided after audition materials have been received. All application materials are due on Monday, March 20, 2023.
All candidates must have applied to the University of Kentucky, BCTC, or Transyvlania prior to auditioning. If a candidate has not applied, they should do so immediately by visiting www.uky.edu/admission. A candidate who is a current UK student or returning Sweetheart Majorette must be in good standing with the university.
Twirlers who have previously twirled with the Wildcat Marching Band are required to audition each year. Thus, positions are open each year, and no preference is given to previous twirler(s). There are no specific number of feature twirlers or majorettes chosen in a given year. However, the program will not exceed 3 feature twirlers and 13 on the majorette line. The number of majorettes will be determined by the number of qualified candidates.
All interested in a Feature Twirler audition must also complete an audition for the Sweetheart Majorette line. Auditions will take place immediately following majorette line auditions.
The auditions will be closed to the public and will be scored on the following sections:
Individual Routines: 2-3 minutes
2:00 - 2:30 minute single baton routine. Each twirler will provide their own music of choice. Twirlers will be asked to submit music at a later date. All interested in feature twirlers will not need to complete this portion as one baton skills will be assessed in your Feature Twirler routine.
Dance Technique, Basic Skills, and Individual Tricks
Following your individual routine, twirlers will be asked to complete basic skills with single and multiple batons. Detailed information listed below in trick and combination listing. Two and three baton skills will be assessed at this time. All Feature Twirler Candidates must participate in this portion of the auditions.
Group Routine
All twirlers will be taught a brief routine at the beginning of the auditions, which will be performed in small groups. Candidates will be adjudicated on ability to quickly learn choreography, memorize/retain, to perform in a group, technique, and overall performance/showmanship. All Feature Twirler Candidates must participate in this portion of the auditions.

Feature Twirler Auditions
Feature auditions will take place immediately following the majorette line auditions. All those who audition for the Sweetheart Majorette Line are eligible to audition for a feature twirler position.
Twirlers will perform a 2:00 - 2:30 minute, including 1 minutes of one baton and the remainder with 2, 3, and 4 baton routine. Each twirler must provide their own music recording of their choice. Twirlers will be asked to submit their audio at a later date.
Following individual routine - twirlers will be required to perform down the field routine and improve to our fight song. On, On, U of K
Improv Routine: Twirlers will be asked to improv to a randomly selected piece of music utilizing 1 through 4 batons.
Skill Assessment: Twirlers will be asked to complete basic skills with single and multiple batons. This will take place during part two of the auditions above. Detailed information on skills required listed below.
All twirlers are asked to be performance ready with hair worn up! During solo performances, twirlers may wear a costume of their choice. During group performances, twirlers will be asked to wear black fitted top and shorts, flesh colored tights and twirling shoes of their choice.
All twirlers will need to provide their own personal batons, music, performance attire, water, and snacks.

A detailed schedule with locations and times will be sent upon application receipt. Plan to check in on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 9:00 am. All auditions should be complete by 6:00 pm. Results will be emailed to all candidates on Monday, April 24, 2023. All member must send an email of decision by Monday, May 1, 2023. New incoming members to the University of Kentucky must also include a letter of acceptance with their email.
