This analysis covers two potential least-cost paths across the Darién Gap in Panama and Colombia. One path begins in Yaviza, Panama and ends in Apartadó, Colombia. The other path also begins in Yaviza, Panama, but ends in Chigorodó, Colombia. The factors that were taken into account in determining these least-cost paths were slope (where higher slopes have exponentially higher costs) and the likely presence of water bodies (determined by areas that are at or below sea level). Other layers that could be useful in further analyses focused on determining a least-cost path across the Darién Gap include vegetation type, soil or rock type, and other water bodies that occur at or above sea level. Another consideration could be the difference in elevation across the potential road, and the resulting cost of moving construction materials to the higher elevations.
