Visiting Students: Visiting students do not take SU's placement exam and should seek advising from their home institution to determine an appropriate language level and how a class will count toward their academic progress.
You may request course syllabi to review with your advisor by emailing syrstrasbourg@syr.edu
SU Students:
Most students need to take the French placement exam to figure out which FRE class level is appropriate, including those that have never taken French!
Syracuse Abroad has requested access for you to take the FRE placement exam so you can skip Step 1 on the Language Placement Exams instructions.
Step 2: Taking the Placement Assessments
Using your NetID and password, log in to MySlice.
Select the “Advising” tile and then select the “Placement Exam” tile
From the Blackboard Institution page, Select Course
Set selections for Select Terms: Current Courses and Filters: Open Courses
Select Placement Exams (1262 for Spring 2026)
Choose the desired language (FRE)
and Step 3: Navigating the Placement Assessment
The assessment begins with a survey.
After finishing the survey, return to the specific language folder for the next step. You will either receive your placement or there will be a link to open the assessment.
After finishing the placement assessment, return to the specific language folder again for your language placement results.
Should you have any technical issue while taking the survey or assessment, please email help@syr.edu for assistance.
You are now ready to register for a language class. (Please allow time for the placement score to populate in MySlice)
Only students that have already taken the placement exam or have taken/are taking a French class at SU are excused!
Finding the appropriate French class:
Your option(s) are based on the results of the placement exam or your SU college-level French language credit.
The placement exam results will give you an "appropriate" class level to register for. You may not register for classes at a higher level.
Per SU's Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics policy, you may not earn credit for a course that repeats prior study. Based on this policy you should not register for a lower level class if you already have AP French or other French transfer credit for that class.
Living in Strasbourg is like being in a 24/7 language lab!
All students will have the opportunity to speak French with staff and faculty once abroad and before classes start. If it's suggested (often during the first week of classes) that an adjustment be made to the FRE class level that you have registered for, you and your academic advisor (or home college/university for visiting students) will be a part of that process at that time.
