Kresge Hotel and Blue Diadem Restaurant

This design is for a restaurant being constructed in the historic building at 176 East Main Street. The design drew inspiration from the form, strength, and visual appeal associated with the cornflower. This aims to combine modernism with elements of nature in allusion to the history of Rochester and how it has come from being known as the “Flower City.” These natural and organic elements are reflected in the design through both literal and figurative interpretations. By incorporating a level of biophilic design to represent the “Flower City” history and a modern aesthetic to represent the manufacturing workhorse Rochester has become, the resulting design successfully serves as a desirable place to meet, eat, and relax.

This design is for a hotel being constructed above the Blue Diadem Restaurant. This section draws inspiration from the era when Rochester was dubbed the "Flower City" in the 1830s during the industrial revolution. With the turn from flour to flower, a different element of beauty was added to the typical industrial stereotype: an element of unexpected attractiveness. Pops of color from different parts of the hotel room converge to create a feeling of placeness in a home away from home.
