2019-2020 Berkner Band Auditions
Q: What is a "Band Audition"??
A: All incoming 8th graders who play woodwind or brass are placed each year in "Concert Band" at Berkner High School, which is the fourth of five bands. Taking a "band audition" gives the student the opportunity to be placed in a band higher than the fourth band. The better your audition, the higher band you are placed in!
All incoming 8th graders who play percussion are placed in a "percussion only" class in the Fall. Specific Band Placement auditions for percussionists will occur next fall.
Q: Do I have to audition?
A: All current 9th through 11th woodwind and brass must audition for proper band placement. 8th grade woodwinds and brass do not have to audition, but must take an audition in order to place into Sym III or Sym II. All 8th graders who do not audition will be placed in Concert Band.
Additionally, any 8th grader interested in auditioning for the Berkner 2019 Midwest Band should click below:
Q: When is the audition?
May 6 &7 Apollo Mon & Tues
(at Apollo during your band class)
May 8 &9 Liberty Wed & Thurs
(at Liberty during your band class)
May 14-16 Berkner Mon-Wed
(at Berkner during your band class)
Q: What will I play at auditions?
- 12 major scales (Junior High students play as many scales, as many octaves as they can)
- Chromatic scale
Think of playing these 13 scales like playing a video game...
... the more octaves you play, and the more scales you play, the higher your score.
..... the higher your score, the higher the band you may place into.
- Metronome Etude
