Dear Honey Dew Families,

For our community, and communities around the United States, my heart hurts. When I became a teacher in my early twenties, I saw the power in educating our youth; the difference I could make on the future of our tomorrow. As a young adult, I believed THAT would make a difference. Teachers do make a tremendous difference but, as we continue to be consumed by the prevalent inequities and injustices that people of color continue to experience, it makes me question what we must do differently. Unfortunately, the reality of the world has not changed, but my lens, my fears, and my reality have.

Raising a daughter who tells people, “my dad is smoke and my mom is honey; I am honey smoke” (Honeysmoke by Monique Fields), we have taught her from the beginning to love who she is as a mixed child. We understand what this means for her. As of today, it will not matter how she self-identifies; some will judge her by the color of her skin. I fight for the injustices she will face if systemic racism continues. I fight for the injustices she will face if racial inequities continue. I stand united in the fight for our community. I stand united with each of you.

In watching the protests over the last week, the power of our youth is visible. They are talking with our leaders, they are organizing protests rooted in peace and justice, and they are not giving up as they pursue change through actions, not words. We must raise our children of color to be strong, advocate for self and others, remain focused, and persevere. And, we must stand beside them, united. We must stand united through our voices and, most importantly, our actions.

Messages for the Week:

This week, Renton school counselors collaborated on social emotional lessons for primary (K-2) and intermediate (3-5) students. They have also written a letter to parents addressing racial equity and support for students to support in talking to your children about these issues.

Honey Dew Has Talent: It’s that time of year where we want to showcase the amazing talent we have at Honey Dew. Even though we are in a virtual world right now, that won’t stop us! We want to invite all of you who would like to demonstrate a talent - singing, dancing, instruments, magic, or whatever. Please see details below!

· Each video must be 1 minute or less

o Student’s entire video may not be shown if time or content does not permit.

· Videos must be turned in by June 9th

· HONEY DEW HAS TALENT will be ready to view online the last week of school.

Chromebooks: In order to continue to provide access to in-home learning materials over the summer, Renton School District students grade K-5 may keep their Chromebooks over the summer. In the fall when we’re back in person, we’ll coordinate how students can return the technology to the school.

· 5TH GRADE STUDENTS: We will coordinate collection at your child’s middle school and provide your 6th grader with a new Chromebook. Dates and information will come from middle school principals closer to the start of the school year.

· LEAVING RENTON: The only students needing to return a Chromebook will be those who are leaving the school district. Additionally, any family who does not want to continue to have the Chromebook at home over the summer may return the device to the school.

During the summer, families may receive alerts from our monitoring software if their student has searched for materials which may indicate a self-harm concern. These alerts are meant to provide a family the resources to begin a conversation to address any potential health concerns. Additionally, you can reach out your personal health provider for resources or Crisis Connection: 1-866-427-4747 or Teen Link: 1-866-833-6546

Student Materials, Medication, Library Book Return, and Kinder Registration Dates:

· Thursday, June 18: For last names A through N, we will be on-site from 9 am to 12 pm. At this time, we will return student materials, check out medications which were left following the closure, have a return bin for HDE library books, and accept kindergarten registration packets.

· Friday, June 19: For last names O through Z, we will be on-site from 9 am to 12 pm. At this time, we will return student materials, check out medications which were left following the closure, have a return bin for HDE library books, and accept kindergarten registration packets

· Monday, June 22: If families are not able to come on Thursday or Friday, we will have a small distribution with minimal staff on Monday, June 22 from 9 am to 12 pm.

· On-Site Medications: Since we are still encouraged to Stay Home, Stay Healthy and Stay Vaccinated, we are happy to keep your student’s medication at school over the summer. If your student is moving to a different Renton School District school in the fall, we will get the medication to the new school.

o In the fall, you will need to provide new medication orders from the health care provider. If your student’s medication expires before school starts, you will also need to provide unexpired medication.

· Drive Thru: If you plan to attend one of the above events on Thursday or Friday, June 18 and 19^th. Please enter off Duvall onto 8^th. Library books will be dropped at the back of the building. Please drive through the small parking lot at the back of the building; staff will be there to assist you at the curb. Then, drive out and down to the front of the building, to pick up materials, medications, and turn in kinder registrations. Please stay in your vehicles and someone will support curbside. Some Honey Dew staff will be on-site, waving at students as we end the 2019-2020 school year.

Para nuestra comunidad y las comunidades de los Estados Unidos, me duele el corazón. Chromebooks: Para continuar brindando acceso a materiales de aprendizaje en el hogar durante el verano, los estudiantes del Distrito Escolar de Renton de grado K-5 pueden conservar sus Chromebooks durante el verano. o En el otoño, deberá proporcionar nuevas órdenes de medicamentos del proveedor de atención médica. Si la medicación de su estudiante caduca antes de que empiece la escuela también deberá proporcionar medicamentos que no hayan caducado.

· Auto Servicio: Si planea asistir a uno de los eventos mencionados anteriormente el Jueves o Viernes, 18 y 19 de Junio. Por favor ingrese por Duvall a la 8^a. Los libros de la biblioteca se dejarán en la parte trasera del edificio. Por favor conduzca a través del pequeño estacionamiento en la parte posterior del edificio; el personal estará allí para ayudarle en la acera. Dear Honey Dew Families,

Next week there will be four (4) days of In-Home Learning resources which start on Tuesday, May 26. Monday, May 25 is Memorial Day and we have no school.

As we all experience this time of stress and uncertainty, it is so important that we are taking care of ourselves. Without attention to self, we are unable to be our best for those around us. In the times of parenting stress this week, and there were many, I must continue to remind myself that, as an adult, these are difficult times to understand. For our children, this is even more complicated. Emotions and energy come out in mysterious ways. As my little one keeps telling family on the phone, “When everyone gets better, we will play at the playground…come visit…give real hugs…”. It is a sweet expression of what she can process.

As adults it is hard not to have answers but, you are not alone. If you a need support, please reach out. We are a community of strength and we must be here for one another. We miss you!

La próxima semana habrá cuatro (4) días de recursos de Aprendizaje en el Hogar que empezarán el Martes 26 de Mayo. El Lunes 25 de Mayo es el Día de la Conmemoración de los Caídos y no tenemos clases.

Ya que todos experimentamos este momento de estrés e incertidumbre, es muy importante que nos cuidemos. Sin atención a nosotros mismos, no podemos ser lo mejor para quienes nos rodean. En los momentos de estrés de los padres esta semana, y hubo muchos, debo seguir recordándome que, como adulto, estos son tiempos difíciles de entender. Para nuestros hijos, esto es aún más complicado. Las emociones y la energía salen de formas misteriosas. Tal como mi niña sigue diciéndole a la familia por teléfono: "Cuando todos mejoren, jugaremos en el parque... iremos de visita... nos daremos abrazos de verdad...". Es una dulce expresión de lo que ella puede procesar.

Como adultos es difícil no tener respuestas, pero no está solo/a. Si necesita ayuda, por favor comuníquese con nosotros. Somos una comunidad de fortaleza y debemos estar aquí el uno para el otro. ¡Los extrañamos!

Dear Honey Dew Families,

Thank you for sharing community celebrations on Honey Dew’s website! As we get closer to June, we are brainstorming ways to celebrate promotion to the next grade level and how to provide closure to students for the 2019-2020 school year. Please watch for more information in the coming weeks. Also, we are continuing to register 2020-2021 kindergarten students and new students to our community. Student Survey: We want to hear from YOU, our students, about learning you are doing at home. This will help us to tailor what we are providing to what is wanted from students. Families, please support students in completing one per child.

Virtual Special Education Services: We began delivering special education services to students on Monday, May 11 for students who have social emotional, reading significantly below, and math services. If you child receives special education services, please watch for weekly emails with small group times from either:

· Natalie Schlappi, Kinder through grade 2

· Courtney Wilson, grades 3 and 5

PTA Virtual Book Fair: If your child needs more books to read, we are having a virtual book fair! You can get more books while supporting Honey Dew at the same time! Orders are delivered right to your doorstep and you can take advantage of FREE shipping on book-only purchases over $25. Items for this week:

• Chromebook distribution round 4, supplies, snack packs, and kindergarten registration will be on Thursday, May 7 from 2 to 4 pm. Thank you PTA for your donation of writing utensils!

• PTA: Show your appreciation for your teachers, especially during this difficult time when they are working extra hard to support students and families! Check out the schedule below for different ways to thank your teachers each day! Send any photos or videos that you would like shared on our website to secretary@honeydewPTA.org.

Virtual Teacher Appreciation Week Activities:

• Monday, May 4th – Send an email to your teacher telling them how much you appreciate them.

• Tuesday, May 5th – Draw a picture for your teacher. Take a photo of your drawing and email it to your teacher.

• Wednesday, May 6th – Draw or write a chalk message for your teacher on the sidewalk and take a picture to send to them.

• Thursday, May 7th – Make a video telling your teacher how much you appreciate them and email it to them.

• Friday, May 8th – Find a rock and decorate it for your teacher. Leave the rock out around your neighborhood for everyone to see how much you love your Honey Dew teachers!

Todas las actividades de aprendizaje de la semana actual y las semanas anteriores se pueden encontrar a través de enlaces de nivel de grado. Esperamos que este nuevo aspecto simplifique el proceso para las familias. Como hemos tenido preguntas de familias, quería compartir la guía de OSPI para el Aprendizaje en el Hogar. Las recomendaciones son:

  • Kínder y 1^er Grado 1:45 minutos al día

  • 2^o y 3^er Grado: 60 minutos al día

  • 4^o y 5^o Grado: 90 minutos al día

• Calificaciones de Primaria: Durante el cierre de la escuela, los maestros continuarán involucrando a los estudiantes en el aprendizaje continuo, así como también brindarán retroalimentación a las familias. Para las calificaciones del 3^er trimestre, en el boletín de calificaciones final, los estudiantes de primaria recibirán una "NA" (No Evaluada Durante Este Período de Reporte), ya que los estudiantes no están obligados a entregar las tareas. Además, una nota que describa por qué se dio el "NA" se registrará en la sección de comentarios de la boleta de calificaciones.

• Educación Especial: Si su hijo/a recibe servicios de educación especial, la administración le enviará un correo electrónico en los próximos días para que pueda revisar el borrador del Plan de Aprendizaje Continuo y proporcionar información. Por favor responda por correo electrónico:

1. Sin cambios

2. Solicitar cambios (Por favor tome en cuenta los cambios propuestos.)

3. Solicite la oportunidad de conversar por teléfono o videoconferencia

Tenemos un cambio rápido con el objetivo de completar todos los Planes de Aprendizaje Continuo antes del Miércoles 29 de Abril.

• Sabemos que algunas de nuestras familias están en crisis debido al estado actual de la comunidad y el mundo en general. Por favor busque ayuda para satisfacer las necesidades básicas con sarah.leonard@rentonschools.us

• Todavía tenemos algunas familias que no han respondido a la encuesta que proporciona permiso de video conferencia para que su hijo/a asista a un aprendizaje virtual con su maestro/a. Si no ha respondido ni al maestro/a de su hijo/a ni a la encuesta, el, Video Chat Permission o Permiso de video chat, por favor hágalo lo antes posible ya que buscamos implementar esto antes del Lunes 4 de Mayo.
