Introduction to Public Safety

Grade Level: 9-12

Introduction to Public Safety is a foundational course that helps students develop the knowledge and skills necessary for success and advancement in specialized preparatory programs for public service jobs. The course emphasizes emergency preparedness, basic first aid, fire management services, legal services, and corrections and law enforcement services.

Introduction to Criminal Justice

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Principles of Public Service

Introduction to Criminal Justice is a one-credit course designed to introduce students to a variety of topics in this area of study, including ethics and professionalism, constitutional and criminal laws, the court system, trial processes, juvenile justice and correctional systems, and human diversity. During the school year, qualified speakers may present information related to course content. If possible, selected field trips and outdoor activities will be key components to the class.


Forensic and Criminal Investigations

Grade Level: 11-12

Prerequisite: completion of Algebra II w/Trig and Chemistry, teacher recommendation

Requirements: $10 lab fee

A one-credit science course, Forensic and Criminal Investigations involves the application of chemical, biological, and physical principles to the investigation of physical evidence in criminal cases. This course entails analytical reasoning, laboratory testing, deductive and inductive thinking skills, and opportunities for developing technical expertise. The course will focus on numerous scientific aspects: biology, physics, chemistry, geology and their relation to criminal investigations. During the school year, qualified speakers may present information related to course content. If possible, selected field trips and outdoor activities will be key components to the class. Students are required to participate in forensics-related novel readings and assigned semester projects.


Law Enforcement and Corrections

Grade Level: 11-12

Prerequisite: Introduction to Public Safety, Introduction to Criminal Justice

Law Enforcement and Corrections is designed to align with the curriculum that many law enforcement academies require and is intended for students who may be interested in pursuing a career in this field. Law Enforcement and Corrections provides an overview of the history, organization, and functions of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Students will examine the role of constitutional law at local, state, and federal levels; the United States legal system; criminal law; law enforcement terminology and procedures; and the classification and elements of crime according to the Criminal Code of Alabama.
