Coach Shaver earned eight varsity letters while participating in Football, Basketball and Baseball. He was captain of the 1961 basketball and baseball teams and a member of the 1960 undefeated football team. He was vice-president of his Junior and Senior Class, held the lead role In the Senior Class Play, and received several honors in athletic and school leadership. He attended Clemson University from 1961 to 1963 and played baseball for the Tigers setting a freshman team record for stolen bases (24 steals in 24 attempts) during the 1961-62 season. He earned a varsity letter in 1962-63 posting a .292 batting average. From 1967 -1971 he served in the US Air Force and graduated from Officer Training School in 1967. In 1972 he became Head Boys Basketball Coach and Assistant Football Coach at Seneca High School. In 1974 the Bobcat basketball team advanced to the Final Four in the State before losing to the eventual State Champion, Mayo High School of Darlington. He started one of the first basketball camps for youth, ages 6 – 17 in the state. In 1980, he accepted a position as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Central Wesleyan College (now Southern Wesleyan University). Three years later he guided the warriors to 22-9 season and runner-up spot in the tough NAIA District Six. In 1983 he was honored by being named Coach of the Year in District Six, the first Warrior Coach to receive the award. In 1992, he returned to Seneca High School and served as Assistant Principal until his retirement in 2006.
