5.MD.2
Standard
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
Student Language:
- "I can make a line plot to display data sets of measurements in fractions."
- "I can use fraction operations to solve problems involving information presented on a line plot."
Explanation
About the Math, Learning Targets, and Rigor
This standard provides a context for students to work with fractions by measuring objects to one-eighth of a unit. This includes length, mass, and liquid volume. Students make a line plot of data and then add and subtract fractions based on data in the line plot.

Common Core State Standards
Use operations on fractions for this grade (knowledge and skills articulated in 5.NF) to solve problems involving information in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
- Tasks requiring students to produce a line plot should only involve fractions 1/2, 1/4, or 1/8.
Performance Indicators: 5.MD.2-2
Level 5: Exceeds Expectations
Uses operations on fractions with denominators of 2, 4, and 8 to solve problems involving information in line plots and interprets the solution in relation to the data.
Level 4: Meets Expectations
Uses operations on fractions with denominators of 2 and 4 to solve problems involving information in line plots.
