Student language:

    • "I can compare the length of two different objects."

Explanation

About the Math, Learning Targets, and Rigor

This standard calls for students to determine the difference in length between two objects.

Students should:

    1. choose actual objects
    2. identify appropriate tools and units
    3. measure both objects
    4. determine the differences in lengths using the same unit of measure.

2nd graders should be familiar enough with inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and meters to be able to compare the differences in lengths of two objects.

Students should use comparative phrases to describe the difference between two objects, such as:

  • “It is longer by 2 inches."
  • “It is shorter by 5 centimeters.”
