This standard builds on the ideas learned in 4.OA.1. In this standard, students must use multiplication and division to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison.

For example,

• Sally is five years old. Her mom is eight times older. How old is Sally's mom?

5 x 8 = 40

Her mom is 40 years old.

• Joe has 8 pencils. This is 4 times as many pencils as Gina. How many pencils does Gina have?

8 = 4 x G

G = 2

Gina has 2 pencils.

• A red scarf costs $18. A blue scarf costs $6. How many times as much does the red scarf cost compared to the blue scarf?

6 x p = 18

p = 3

The red scarf costs 3 times as much as the blue scarf.
