4.NBT.1

Support Videos & Extra Practice

In this standard, students must understand that the place value system is based on units of ten. Therefore, a digit in the tens place is ten times greater than the same digit in the ones place.

Example: In the number 74, the value of the 7 is 70. In the number 17, the value of the 7 is 7. The value of the 7 in 74 is 10 times greater than the value of the 7 in 17.

Example: The value of 5 in 5,210 is ___________ times the value of the 5 in 3,251. (The correct answer is 100 times)

A lot of students will answer 20 for this question. They believe that two place values would be 10 + 10. One way to clarify this mistake is to think about the value of the digit. The 5 in 5,210 is 5,000. The 5 in 3,251 is 50.

50 x 100= 5,000 OR 5,000 Ă· 50 = 100
