A cluster analysis approach on exploring a typology of second-hand clothing consumers
The emerging market of second-hand clothing has been globally increasing in recent years due to its enormous increase in economic growth. However, only several studies explored the motivations and perceptions on sustainable fashion and environmental concerns related to second-hand clothing. This study aims to advance the investigation of second-hand clothing by developing a typology on its consumers based on their demographics, behavioral and psychographic characteristics. The data used in the study are extracted from the online survey with 384 consumers of second-hand clothing, who are residents of Iligan City. The analysis of the data has two processes to develop a typology which are: Descriptive Analysis and K-means clustering. Despite having diverse characteristics among consumers of SHC, the majority of the respondents have the tendency to purchase second-hand clothing that is of good quality at a reasonable price where they purchase clothes that fit their style, even if they might not be the absolute newest trends or the most expensive sustainable options. Based on the statistical analysis results, the suggested typology were "Compulsive Fashion Shopper," "Budget-Conscious Young Thrifter," and "Eco-Conscious Nostalgic Thrifter" which these typologies offer valuable insights to existing and future entrepreneurs in understanding and potentially targeting secondhand clothing consumers based on their offerings within the city and similar markets.
