Students find or create a non pitched percussion instrument to bring to school.
Due to the concerns about possible virus spread, music classes will take place either outside, or in the homeroom classrooms to start. Also, we won’t be able to share instruments like we normally do unless they can be cleaned between each student's use. Because of all of this, I would like students to have a small instrument that they can keep at school. They will play it during music class time. For now, a non-pitched percussion instrument is needed. For your assignment please take some time this week to find out what musical instruments you may have at home, figure out if you have any small non-pitched percussion instrument that you would be willing to bring to the school. It will be up to you and to your parents/guardians to choose an instrument that you are allowed to bring to school safely. You should probably keep any high value instruments at home. Your at school instrument should be small enough to carry in a backpack, and keep in a desk or cubbie.
If you find that you don’t have a non-pitched percussion instrument to bring to school, you can make one at home to bring. Below I have attached links to videos on Youtube that you can watch to give you ideas of how to create your own instrument at home. Also, here are a few lists of examples of pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments to help you understand the difference. If you want you can simply bring two sticks to use as drumsticks or rhythm sticks. Be creative and have fun.
Distance and remote students: If you are attending school this year as a distance/remote student at home, you still need to complete the assignment. Please find, obtain or make a non-pitched percussion instrument to use at home you will use it from time to time when completing your music assignments.
Be careful:
When making instruments or doing crafts at home please get permission and have a parent or adult help you with anything that might be sharp or hot. If you are using metal cans, pointy scissors and any other sharp object make sure that you have permission and help from your parents.
