Starting with statehood, three major acts passed by the U.S. Congress affected who owned Alaska's land: the 1959 Alaska Statehood Act, the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), and the 1980 Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). Taken together, these three acts changed the ownership or status of 252 million acres, over 2/3 of Alaska's land.
In this chapter, we examine the story behind each of these major acts and the changes they made to who owns and manages Alaska's lands.
