World War II and the Cold War were economic and political turning points in Alaska's history. Except for the brief years of the Klondike Gold Rush, the remote and sparsely populated Alaska barely entered the national consciousness before World War II.
But Pearl Harbor and the invasion of the Aleutians the following year forever changed that. Alaska's strategic importance at the center of North Pacific and Arctic transportation routes was fully realized. Massive military spending and activity over the next two decades brought incredible economic and population growth, which laid the foundation for modern Alaska and its becoming the 49th state.
