Reading Guide for Chapter 3: Building Alaska

In the years after the Gold Rush, Alaska's population growth slowed down and stabilized. But this period experienced important growth in other ways. Alaska received its first territory-wide representative government, an important milestone in allowing Alaskans to control their own land and future. The economy diversified and matured as new industries developed. New transportation infrastructure connected the growing territory. This lesson will explore the development of Alaska's government, economy, and transportation systems in the years following the Gold Rush.
