PSAT Overview
The PSAT/NMSQT takes 2 hours and 45 minutes and consists of 3 tests: (1) the Reading Test, (2) the Writing and Language Test, and (3) the Math Test. Most of the questions are multiple choice, though some math questions ask you to write in the answer rather than select it. It includes a Reading Test, Writing and Language Test, and Math Test.
The Reading Test presents five reading passages followed by multiple-choice questions about each passage. You have 60 minutes to complete this test, which includes 47 questions total.
The Writing and Language test is a multiple-choice test where you read passages, find mistakes and weaknesses, and fix them. This part of the PSAT/NMSQT is 35 minutes long, includes 4 passages, and contains 44 multiple-choice questions.
The Math Test focuses on the areas of math that play the biggest role in a wide range of college majors and careers:
Heart of Algebra, which focuses on the mastery of linear equations and systems.
Problem Solving and Data Analysis, which is about analyzing problems and drawing information from data.
Passport to Advanced Math, which features questions that ask you to manipulate complex equations.
The Math Test also includes 2 questions from Additional Topics in Math, including the geometry and trigonometry most relevant to college and career readiness.
The Math Test is divided into two parts: a no-calculator portion and a calculator portion. In both portions, most of the test is multiple choice, but some of the questions at the end ask you to write the answer (these are called “grid-ins”).

Updates & Reminders
Ordering Test Materials. Those of you who haven’t ordered test materials will be getting a separate email from me with directions on how to do this
Registration: The class you will be rostering students to is the Testing PSATcourse 08979D08. This course is only a placeholder course.
This year every student needs to be rostered by name with demographic information in the system in order to test
We pay for each student who is registered in the system, whether they test or don’t.
Registration needs to be done 4 weeks prior to test day.
If you are testing the week of October 11, then this needs to be done September 11
Only one bulk upload can be done to roster all of the students into the system.
After that bulk upload is done, if a student needs to be added or deleted, it needs to be done one by one by hand
I will help you develop the bulk upload roster file, but you as the school itself will have to upload the file
First thing we need to do is identify the students who are going to take the PSAT
*** In order to help you identify and track the students who are taking the PSAT and to get clean data for the registration file, we are asking you to roster students who are going to take the PSATto a placeholder tested class. For high schools, this is the same as rostering credential students to the placeholder tested EOCEP classes. For middle schools this is like rostering students to the placeholder ESOL advisory class.
Horry County Schools vision is to be a premier, world-class school system in which every student acquires an excellent education. Our schools will be welcoming centers organized around high-quality teaching and learning.
