Beauty in Blackness: Celebrating the contributions of black people through art

The Beauty in Blackness art showcase was created to provide a permanent virtual space for Highline district students and our local community to come together to celebrate Black people and Black movements. The gallery is not meant to be "on display" for a set amount of time, but instead will exist permanently as a website that can be revisited and shared indefinitely. Our goal in creating the showcase was to create a space where students could share the feelings they experience when reflecting on the beauty in Blackness. Students were invited to create pieces inspired by one (or both) of these questions:

How have you been empowered by the accomplishments of Black people and/or Black movements? Who is a Black person that inspires you?

The gallery features poetry, drawings, paintings, and digital art from 13 artists spanning across eight different schools. It's been very exciting to receive these beautiful pieces of art over the past few months! We're so happy that we finally get to share this work with you all.

As you're looking through the gallery, we ask that you spend time reflecting on the emotions that arise. Take time to answer the guiding questions above for yourself.
