All three tasks need to be completed prior to school beginning!
This is a commonly asked question from high school students — and understandably so. Let us be clear: the reason for this summer assignment is not to take away from your break or burden you with unnecessary work. Instead, there are important academic reasons behind it.
First, completing a summer assignment keeps your mind active and engaged with historical thinking while you're away from school, so you're ready to dive in when classes begin on August 4. Second, and even more importantly, this work lays the foundation for the historical concepts, vocabulary, and analytical skills that you will use consistently throughout the entire course. It’s your first step in building the habits of mind that AP World History will ask of you all year long — things like making historical connections, understanding context, and using evidence effectively.
The summer assignment is broken down into three manageable tasks — roughly one every two weeks of summer. Plan ahead and budget your time wisely. It is expected that your completed work is ready to turn in on the first day of school.
Finally, we want to say WELCOME TO AP WORLD HISTORY! You’ve chosen a challenging and rewarding path. You will be expected to work hard, but in return, you’ll gain valuable skills and a deeper understanding of the world. Taking on an AP course shows colleges that you are willing to challenge yourself with rigorous academic opportunities — and that’s something to be proud of.
Enjoy your summer — rest, relax, and recharge — and come prepared to hit the ground running in August!
