8th Grade Activities in May

Parents and Guardians,

8th grade has a lot of activities happening this month. We just want to make you aware of everything coming up.

May 15th - IVY Tech Dual Credit sign-up. Students will need their Social Security number to complete. See letter below for more information.

May 18th - Reality Store: 8th grade students missed Reality Store as 7th graders due to COVID so they will have a chance to experience it this year. This is a way for students to experience what it is to be an adult with bills and responsibilities. Students will select a job based on their GPA. They will then receive a salary and checkbook to use to pay their way through a month’s living expenses; their first stop being the IRS. By the end, we hope they will have a little appreciation for what you as their parents have to cover to make sure they are taken care of financially.

May 18th - All 8th grade students will also take a test through IVY Tech that will help them qualify for any future dual credit classes they may choose to take throughout their high school career; available through Connersville High School and Whitewater Career Center. This will occur during the half of the day that they are not in the Reality Store (see above).

May 20th - 8th grade students will tour CHS with guides and will meet many of the staff at the high school. This will give them a chance to become familiar with the school set up and some of the helper adults at CHS. If you do not wish your student to join the tour of CHS, you will need to contact Student Services at 825-1139 ext. 26329.

Parent/Guardian,

Connersville Middle School will provide time and support for all 8th grade students to complete the Ivy Tech DualEnroll student application on Monday, May 16th. The purpose of DualEnroll is to have all potential dual credit students complete the application in order to create an account with Ivy Tech Community College.

Several 8th grade students have already applied and been accepted to become a member of the CHS Early College High School program. In addition to the ECHS program, Connersville High School offers dual college credits in Agriculture and Manufacturing. Students also have the opportunity to earn college credits at Whitewater Career Center. CHS offers 32 different dual credit courses equaling 109 college credits. WCC offers 62 dual credit courses totaling 205 college credits. The opportunities that our students have are awesome!

A student must complete the DualEnroll application and meet testing pre-requisites prior to being eligible to receive college credits for most college dual credit courses. We want to get started with the application and testing while students are still in school during May. Students tend to test better now as opposed to early in August.

In order to complete the application, the student must have the following information:

· Student Social Security Number

· Student Home address

· Student Phone number

· Student Personal Email (school email may be used if student doesn’t have one)

· Parent(s)/Guardian(s) phone number & address

· Parent(s)/Guardian(s) email

Any student that does not have all of this information will not be able to complete the application or required testing. The student will not be able to receive any dual college credits without the application/testing. All information is stored with Ivy Tech’s online system and will be on record for the life of the DualEnroll registration structure. If students don’t have their Social Security Number, they must complete signup at home before May 18th so students can take the follow up testing.

CHS will be providing staff to guide students in the enrollments process on May 16th. They will return later that week to get the required testing started. It is possible that students may not complete all the testing during that particular session. Their progress can be saved and they can finish the test outside of the school building. If they do not receive the required benchmark score, the test allows them to practice particular skills and continue testing until they reach the benchmark. Please ask your student about the testing and their progress. It will benefit your child greatly by finishing the testing during the spring.

Thank you,

CHS Dual Credit team
