Make a Good Plan!
We anticipate that some buildings and/or room types will fill up. We recommend all students have a plan b if their first choice is not available.
Example: You and your roommate are interested in a double room in Trusler that faces Welch Stadium. If that is not available, what will you look for next?
Example: Your room selection begins at 10:30 am. A couple of hours before your selection start time, you charge your computer and have a list of room types and buildings you're looking for.
Example: Your roommate is traveling on the room selection date and will not have reliable internet. Before room selection, you plan out what room options you will look for and then make a plan to text them the room assignment after it's completed.
Do I need to be on campus to make my room selection? Nope! Room selection is completely virtual! Steps to access room selection will be emailed to all eligible students. If you have questions during room selection, we will have ResLife team members available to assist via phone (620-341-5264) and email (reslife@emporia.edu).
I don't see my first choice. What should I do? Residential Life encourages all students to identify not only their top choice for a room assignment, but also alternatives piror to room selection. Some room options are very popular and will fill more quickly than others and participating in room selection does not gaurentee an assignment to a specific room or building.
How does room selection work? What is a start time? Any student eligible for the first round of room selection will receive a notification the week of April 6 that includes two important pieces of information:
Their start time: A start time is an assigned time during the selection day when a resident can make their room assignment. The first round of room selection on Saturday, April 11 will be open from 9am to 4pm. Students will be assigned start times throughout the day.
Example: I received the email the week of April 6. It states my start time is 10am on Saturday, April 11. I can go in anytime between 10am and 4pm on the April 11 to make my room selection.
Example: My email states my start time is 9:15am, but my break from work isn't until 9:30am. During my break at 9:30am, I access room selection using the steps in my email and make my room selection.
Directions to access room selection. See above.
My roommate and I have different start times. What do we do? It's very common for roommates to have different start times. Only one roommate needs to complete the room assignment for/all students in the roommate group.
Example: Roommate A and Roommate B are in a roommate group together. Roommate A's start time is 9:15am, but Roommate B's start time is 2pm. Roommate A logs in at 9:15am and makes the room assignment for themself and Roommate B. Roommate B doesn't need to log in at 2pm, since Roommate A has already completed the room assignment.
How was I assigned my start time for room selection? Every student eligible for the first round of room selection was randomly assigned a start time for Saturday, April 11.
How can I ensure that the other student I want to live with will also be assigned to the same room as me? Complete a roommate group under the Roommate Groups page in the housing application. All roommate requests must be completed before room selection and assignment.
Can I look up room layouts/floor plans? Yes! See the Floor Plans section above.
Can I change my room assignment after I've already made it? To make a change, you may contact the Residential Life Main Office at 620-341-5264, and our staff will talk you through the options available. We do not keep a waitlist for a potential room change.
My preferences have changed, but I didn't edit my application. What options will I have? Housing app preferences are not required to match a room assignment. Students will see all available rooms at the time of their selection, regardless of their preferences.
