Curriculum
Math
Your child is about to explore comparing and ordering numbers. To master this skill, your child will build on his or her knowledge of comparing and ordering numbers up to 120 using words and symbols. As your child extends his or her knowledge of this concept throughout second grade, he or she will learn the following concepts:
Using place value to compare numbers Students will use sentence stems to help; e.g., 732 is less than 794 (732 < 794), and 794 is greater than 732 (794 > 732).
Using place value to order numbers
Finding numbers that are greater than or less than a given number
Finding numbers with given values of more or less than another number For example, find a number that is 10 more than 456.
While working with your child at home, you may find the following vocabulary terms helpful in your communication about comparing and ordering numbers. These are terms your child will be encouraged to use throughout our explorations and during our math chats, which are short, whole-group discussions at the conclusion of each activity.
Inequality: A statement that shows two values or items not equal in value, amount, or size
<: The symbol that means less than another number
>: The symbol that means greater than another number
=: The symbol that means equal to or the same value as another number
We will do many explorations in class to help your child learn these concepts from firsthand experiences. Encourage your child to share these experiences with you, and to teach you what he or she has learned. Ask your child to identify examples of what he or she is learning in everyday life, or use the attached page for ideas of activities to do at home to apply the concept your child is learning in class

Phonics: We will be reviewing all skills taught so far to prepare for our assessment that will be taken towards the end of the week.
science/Social Studies
**We will alternate between science and social studies each week**
During the first nine weeks, second graders will be learning about rules and authority figures in the home, the school, and the local community. We will also participate in Freedom Week activities as the nation celebrates Constitution Day, September 17th. This unit will help students as they learn to participate as informed citizens in a Constitutional Republic.
Students will compare rules between home, school, and local community. They will learn how authority figures in the home, the school, and the community, such as parents, principals, teachers, and police officers, are similar yet different. They will begin exploring the idea that different places have different rules and that authority figures make and enforce rules. Students will generate rules for the classroom.
You can help your child in several ways:
Talk with your child about the rules they follow at school and at home.
Discuss the consequences that occur when rules are not followed.
Share the “why” behind the rules-to maintain order, safety and security.
Discuss why and how we say the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag and the Pledge to the Texas Flag.
Point out the American flag and the Texas flag as you drive around town. Talk about how they are similar and how they are different.
Listen to patriotic songs, such as The Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful and discuss what the lyrics imply.
Share memories of patriotic holidays that your family celebrates such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day.
