Reading and Writing
This nine weeks, our focus in reading and writing will be on nonfiction. Our reading unit of study Becoming Experts: Reading Nonfiction supports the reading work that is important for nonfiction readers. Readers will explore growing ideas about a topic, understanding and using key words, and connecting information from one text to another strengthening your second grader’s nonfiction reading skills.
Our writing unit The How-To Guide for Nonfiction Writing introduces your second grader to the world of nonfiction by supporting them with writing lots of nonfiction books. Writers learn that they can take anything they know a lot about and write in ways that teach their readers about the topic. This unit will provide opportunities for independence as writers explore writing many different nonfiction books.

We will learn how to solve problems, make decisions and analyze issues from multiple perspectives. (Do I buy the toy with my $5 or do I buy my cafeteria lunch?)
