Reading and Writing
This nine weeks, students will begin a new reading unit of study Tackling Longer Words and Longer Books that will focus on solving tricky words, understanding the characters in our books, and reading with fluency.
In writing this nine weeks, our focus will be writing letters about the books your child is reading to share his/her opinions and reasons and examples for that opinion.
Instructional Approach
Readers will grow in their comprehension by understanding literary language, tracking events of longer stories, and fluency. Readers will learn to hold onto longer and longer texts. Students will begin to monitor for sense and to be active meaning makers as they encounter trickier language and storylines. Readers will monitor comprehension by stopping, rereading, and asking questions. Readers will make inferences with text evidence and retell stories to support comprehension.
Writers will learn the structure for writing letters to persuade by sharing their opinions, giving reasons and examples to support their opinions about the books they have been reading.
Family Support
You can help your child in several ways.
Read daily with your child at his/her “just right” level.
Help your child find story ideas in his/her lives- moments that stand out.
Talk to your child about what they are noticing in the books they are reading. Look at the books as a writer. Ask how this author began or ended the story, added details, dialogue, and action.
Write letters with your child about the books your child is reading. Include the opinion of the book, reasons for that opinion, and examples that support your opinion.
Write letters to your child about the books you are reading.
