Beginning with the 2017–2018 school year, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) assessments will no longer be administered. Students for whom TAKS is a graduation requirement, including former TAAS and TEAMS examinees, may pursue the following two options to receive a Texas high school diploma.
1. Request a district decision. More details about this option can be found in the Texas Administrative Code §74.1027. The district shall determine whether a former student may qualify to graduate and receive a high school diploma on the basis of the alternative requirements for graduation.
An individual has met the Alternative Requirements in TAC 74.1027 if he or she:
(1) has met the performance standard on an alternate assessment as specified in §101.4003 of this title (relating to Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Exit-Level Alternate Assessments);
(2) has performed satisfactorily on the applicable subject-area test of a state-approved high school equivalency examination in accordance with §89.43(a)(4) of this title (relating to Eligibility for a Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency);
(3) provides evidence of attainment of a Texas Education Agency-approved industry-recognized postsecondary license or certification §74.1003;
(4) provides evidence of current active duty service in the armed forces or a DD Form 214 indicating honorable or general discharge from the armed forces; or
(5) has successfully completed college-level coursework and earned college credit.
2. Achieve satisfactory performance on an alternate assessment. The alternate assessments allowed for TAKS are SAT, ACT, TSI, and STAAR. Former TAKS, TAAS, and TEAMS examinees should take only the appropriate part of the alternate assessment he or she needs to fulfill testing graduation requirements.
