Gemini is a type of Artificial Intelligence called a Large Language Model (LLM). In simple terms, it is a computer system trained on large amounts of text so it can understand language, answer questions, generate ideas, and have conversations in a natural way.
IIn education, LLMs can act as helpful thinking partners for teachers. They can support lesson planning, create examples and activities, help analyze student work, and brainstorm feedback or instructional ideas. When used thoughtfully, these Gemini can save time, spark creativity, and support high-quality teaching.
Denton ISD recommends the use of Google Gemini as the district-approved LLM for staff. Gemini is integrated with Google Workspace, protecting user privacy and ensuring compliance with district policies.
To unlock access for your DISD Google Worspace, staff must first complete the AI 101: Foundations for Empowered Teaching course.
Completing this course ensures every teacher begins with a shared understanding of ethical use, privacy expectations, and district-approved workflows.
Educators may also encounter other large language models such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. While these tools are valuable for exploration, Gemini remains the district-supported and secure platform for instructional and professional use.
When you using Gemini with your Denton ISD Google account, your conversations are NOT used to train Google’s public AI models. This provides an added layer of privacy and protection for staff and student information.
This is different from using Gemini with a personal Google account — or using many public AI tools such as ChatGPT and other LLMs — where user interactions may be used to help improve and train the larger AI model.
What is a prompt?
A prompt is the set of instructions we provide to an AI system. While it’s possible to start with a broad request and refine it, this approach can be time-consuming and requires reviewing each new response for adjustments. By being specific and detailed in the initial prompt, we can ensure that the AI’s response more closely aligns with our expectations. When using an AI model, think... PROMPT!
