This Region 10 Sheltered Instruction E-Course consists of six modules.
Module 1 participants establish a working definition for the concept of sheltered instruction and learn how connecting to background knowledge is a key aspect of this instructional approach.
Module 2 clarifies the heterogeneity among students labeled Emergent Bilingual learners (EBs) and how the components of a sheltered instruction approach can be implemented to ensure content is taught alongside second language acquisition methods.
Module 3 explains the four proficiency level descriptors currently used by the state of Texas to monitor an Emergent Bilingual learner’s language development, how educators can use data to learn their student's proficiency levels, and how Authentic Assessment in the classroom can help educators check for progress in both language acquisition and content comprehension.
Module 4 explores the English language proficiency standards (ELPS) and how to apply them in planning language objectives that relate to the content objectives taught.
Module 5 elaborates on the actual second language acquisition learning strategies that will help to adequately communicate, sequence, and scaffold classroom instruction for students at various proficiency levels in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Module 6 reinforces understanding by connecting practices in the classroom to the second language acquisition research behind sheltered instruction that TEA has used to guide their program model requirements for Emergent Bilingual learners. The interrelated components common among all sheltered instruction models are modeled throughout the course and connections are made to previous learning – all through the lens of a classroom teacher.
