In 1568 Cardinal Alessandro Farnese had agreed to fund the church, but he had some specific conditions. He had only agreed to fund the church if he could be the sole patron and if he would be able to choose who the architect was and what plan they had followed. Alessandro had ended up choosing Jacopo Vignola as the architect and chose Giacomo Della Porta's plan for the building. Giacomo Della Porta, born in 1532 in Porlezza Italy, had been both an architect and a sculptor. After his plan of the Il Gesú, he would die 34 years later in Rome. Jacopo Vignola, or also known as Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, was born in 1507 in Vignola Italy. The Il Gesú is considered one of his greatest works as he is also considered one of the greatest architects of the 16th century. He would later die 5 years after the construction of the Il Gesú, in 1573 in Rome.
Construction for the Il Gesú had begun in 1568 and ended in 1580
