The Great Mosque of Kairouan was originally built in 670 CE in Kairouan, Tunisia. The mosque was originally constructed by Uqba ibn Nafi, a conquering general. It was rebuilt from 836-875 by Prince Ziyadat Allah I. The mosque was originally built with mud-brick but then rebuilt with permanent stone, wood, and brick.
Uqba ibn Nafi: Uqba ibn Nafi was an Arab general and a companion of Muhammad. He is also the founder of Kairouan in Tunisia. The Great Mosque of Kairouan was originally built by him in the seventh century.

Prince Ziyadat Allah I: Ziyadat Allah I was the Emir, Muslim ruler, of Ifriqiya from 817 to 838CE. The renovation of the mosque was started during his rule but was completed after his death.
