Instructors: Dr. Tyler Harvey & Dr. Jordon Gilmore

What is the K12 Sports Science Creative Inquiry (CI)?

The K12 Sports Science Creative Inquiry is an undergraduate lead, graduate and faculty facilitated research project in the Bioengineering department of Clemson University.

What is the purpose and mission of the CI?

The purpose of the CI is to bridge together sports and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) by creating interactive athletic activities which aim to teach K12 student athletes STEM concepts.

The CI's mission is to get student athletes, who are typically not interested in STEM, excited to learn more about STEM.

What is STEM?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It represents the connection that those disciplines have with each other.

For example, biology and engineering are used together as bioengineering. This is a combination of the study of life with the design and creation of new devices. Thus, bioengineering is a STEM subject aimed at creating devices which improve life. The bioengineering discipline also utilizes technology, mathematics, chemistry, and other science subjects.

What is sports science?

Sports science is a STEM subject that has many applications. Sports science focuses on the scientific principles that occur during sports activities.

Some examples are:

  • the forces involved when hitting a baseball or softball with a bat

  • your velocity and acceleration while running

  • the trajectory of a basketball shot
