Wolf Totem
2015 China Mandarin / Mongolian 121 minutes
(YJH)
(YFC)
(YJH)
(YJH)
(YFC)
(YJH)
The exotic frontier is often made the vehicle, not merely for social satire which exposes the folly of mainstream social values, by contrast with the simple, unaffected, natural conducts of the savages, but for more or less serious assaults on the very base of mainstream society. In Wolf Totem, Tengger plain offers an exotic utopia space/ haven for these educated youth from techno-capitalist domination of Han Chinese. It adumbrates a prototype of human ecology shaped by a primitive environment. However, the author Jiang Rong is far from simply idealizing or romanticizing the Mongolian minority community or their ethnic culture because he perceives their vulnerability and victimization by Han Chinese colonization and material-oriented development. Therefore I see it more as a Frontier Dystopia or the loss of a Frontier Utopia. (JJC)

1. Do you like the film you watched, why or why not?
For the most part it was pretty good. I think it had a lot of interesting historical and social elements about China. In terms of a general movie I do not think it was very unique. Most of the emotional and action were good but not especially moving. The plot was not bad but I wish it had been a bit more complex. I felt like the perspective of the movie was good and that it was fairly realistic with the exceptions of a few scenes(wolf suicide and escape from sheep pen). I would like to learn more about the cultural revolution and the conditions in different parts of China during that time. I think this movie helped to intrigue me in that way.
2. Do you think this film helps you learn the language? In what way?
Yes I think it was helpful in a couple ways. In a movie like this there is a fair amount of conversational dialogue so that I could understand most of what was said, while also introducing me to new colloquial sayings and words. There weren’t really any long monologues which is good because that might increase the time spent figuring out the meaning. Since the setting was something like rural China, I think there was an increase in some more unusual terms that I wouldn’t learn in an urban or modern setting.

1. Do you like the film you watched, why or why not?
I liked the film I chose very much. I feel that Wolf Totem is a great cultural reference to learn about early Mongolian life. The Mongolians belief strong belief in the circle of life and death or give and take, their god Tengger, and cultural songs (presented at 1:04:30) I also felt the aspect of human nature and animal nature proved to be very intriguing, for example, in terms of humans the movie displayed greed, betrayal, and corruption. In terms of the animals it presented a sense of hatred, and family but both showed feelings of loss, and love.
2. Do you think this film helps you learn the language? In what way?
I think the movie does help me learn grammatical structures in the Chinese language thanks to the Chinese subtitles, but in terms of learning the language only from listening is impossible for me. I am not certain if certain words were said with an accent but certain things that I heard did not match the subtitles that were presented. One example being the beginning of the movie when the lady was welcoming them to the village, the characters that appeared were 欢迎 but that is not exactly what I heard.

24:32-26:57 why is it a ritual to kill wolf cubs for Tengger? Who or what is Tengger?
5. What cultural elements do you think are worthy of discussion in class?
The strong belief of when they take something from the land they must return it one day. I also feel that their living style in the grasslands should also be discussed.
6. Is there anything you would like to learn more or say about this film?
I want to know if the main character returned to his life in Beijing or continued to live in the grasslands.

1. Do you like the film you watched, why or why not?
At first glance I wasn’t sure what to expect from the movie, but after the first couple of scenes I was impressed with how well the movie kept my attention. It felt more like I was watching a documentary of sorts, and even though I am not sure how accurate its content was I felt that it was very informative nonetheless.
2. Do you think this film helps you learn the language? In what way?
I struggle with the speed at which the Chinese language is spoken, so reading the Chinese subtitles was tough but the English subtitles helped me keep up with the movie. However, when I did try and listen to what was being said and read the Chinese subtitles I was pleasantly surprised with how much of the characters I could make out. I think it helped me with my listening and reading skills overall because everything was happening so quickly that my comprehension had to be as reactive to each movie scene.
3.1 Sections that you would like to use for reading comprehension practice?
There was a scene with Chen Zhen and A’ba, where they watch the wolves for a while. A’ba takes time to explain to Chen Zhen the wolves habits and how they work together to get their food. It was one of the more relaxed moments of the scene where the conversation was slower then usual. It seems like a good moment to practice following the conversation at a slower rate and then work toward becoming accustomed to the faster paced conversation.
3.2 Sections that you would like to use for listening comprehension practice?
Similarly with improving my reading comprehension, the scene where Chen Zhen explains to his friend that he can’t give up the wolf pup seems like a good spot to practice my listening skills. There is nothing else happening in the scene, and it is a pretty straightforward conversation so I think it would help to get proficient at understanding the spoken language at that pace and then start to understand the more complex conversations.
4. Are there any sections you don't understand? If yes, what are they? (Please let me know the times/minute and second in the film with a very brief description.)
I understood most of what was happening in the film, seeing as there were English subtitles, but the speed at which the scenes transitioned was tough to try and keep up with the subtitles. For me the only really difficult part was the translation of the Chinese subtitles into English, as I felt like I wasn’t getting the whole story seeing as some information was literally lost in translation.
5. What cultural elements do you think are worthy of discussion in class?
I really loved the whole setting of this movie as I knew little about Mongolia but knew that it was a really fascinating place. I can’t think of anything specifically that would be beneficial to discuss in class, but if there is anything I learned from this film it is to be accepting of other cultures. I was very uncomfortable when the natives killed the wolf pups, but similarly with my time spent in China, there are aspects of every single culture that can be frowned upon. Killing wolf pups in America isn’t custom or even moral, but to the natives in Mongolia they lived off of their land any which way they could. The Mongolians relationship with the earth really fascinated me throughout the film.
6. Is there anything you would like to learn more or say about this film?
Overall I would say it was a highly enjoyable film, so much so that my roommate actually watched it with me! I have stayed away from watching Chinese movies as I thought the subtitles would be annoying, but the film kept my attention very well and I would like to test my Chinese language skills more by trying to see how much of the language I can understand through film.
